Intro:
“And We certainly made the Quran easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?” If you have stumbled upon this video you probably had the thought that you want to memorize more of the quran or read it more often. This in itself is a mercy from Allah(SWT) to put that desire in your heart. You could have been anywhere doing anything right now but something in your heart made you click this blog post. Now the question becomes are you willing to take the first action towards that desire. We will be discussing in this video series tips on how to memorize the Quran. However, before we dive right into the memorization portion there are certain conditions that must be understood and filled. The word conditions itself may seem daunting but all these conditions are done actually continuously throughout your Quran journey so it will be good to have these in the back of your mind.
Condition 1: Sincere Intentions
The first condition is having sincere intentions. Ask yourself why are you striving to memorize quran? Is it so you can implement the quran more into your life? Perhaps it is so you can gain a routine in your life. Or maybe it's to show others that you are in the process of becoming a hafidh or have become a hafidh? The last question is something that may bring out the wrong intention in learning the Quran and it is beneficial to purify and have sincere intentions to memorize the Quran. Intentions are naturally fleeting and changing as well so the constant renewal of it will matter.
So what is the correct intention? Simply put, the correct intention is to memorize solely for the sake of Allah(SWT). There is a hadith in Sahih Muslim that talks about the effects of the intentions on the day of judgment in which I will share a snippet about the quran reciter. Abu Hurayrah (ra) heard the Messenger of Allah (saw) say: …. “Next, a man who memorized and imparted knowledge and read the Quran will be brought forward. Allah will remind him of the favors he had bestowed upon him and the man will acknowledge them. Then He will ask him: What did you do to express gratitude for it? The man will reply: I acquired knowledge and taught it, and read the Quran for Your sake. Allah will respond: You have lied. You acquired knowledge so that people might call you a learned (man), and you have read the Quran so that they may call you a reciter, and they have done so. A command will then be issued about him, and he will be dragged on his face and thrown into hell….”
From this hadith we can see the utmost importance of keeping our intentions sincere to memorize for the sake of Allah(swt). On the flip side, if we can have the correct intentions the effect is that we become the best of people. In Sahih Buhkari, Uthman ibn Affan (ra) narrates the Prophet Muhammad (saw) said: “The best of you is the one who learns the Quran and teaches it (to others).”
Condition 2: Time & Patience
The second condition is giving the Quran time and patience. This condition is constantly overlooked because we hear so many amazing stories that oh this person is a hafidh, or there are people that became hafidh in less than a year, or even a few months. We as humans are so outcome focused but don’t see the little actions and steps that it took to get there. Maybe that person who memorized the Quran in a few months had been reading the Quran daily for hours for many years and then decided to embark on the memorization journey.
We need to recognize our own life and set realistic expectations. A lot of us have jobs, go to school, and have families to take care of. The question is can we set aside 30 minutes a day to consistently read? And from there build upon that foundation? This is a journey in which we must give the Quran its due rights by giving it the proper time and patience with it.
It boils down to priorities in your life. Do you want to prioritize this in your life? Because we will prioritize everything else, but maybe before our day starts we prioritize 15 minutes to the Quran and 15 minutes at the end of the day which every single person can prioritize.
Condition 3: Dedication & Motivation
The third condition is dedication & motivation. You can have sincere intentions and the time & patience for the Quran but if you are not dedicated and motivated for this journey you will burnout. Dedication and motivation are essential in this. This comes back to understanding why do you want to memorize the Quran and knowing that you are doing this to get closer to your lord is an amazing form of motivation. If you are dedicated & motivated continually make dua to Allah to open your heart, brain, and spirit towards these books and to never let this leave you. Allah gave the Quran to all of us and now it is us to take the steps to become the best of people.
Condition 4: Correct Pronunciation
The last condition is correct pronunciation. Whether you speak Arabic or not, the correct pronunciation will be key to easing your memorization. These are the words of your lord and we should not take it lightly to mispronounce any letter. The Arabic language is such a deep language that a slight change in the pronunciation of a letter can change the meaning completely. An example of this is daal and taa correctly. In the fourth ayat of surah Al-Fathia there is a common error where the daal sounds like a taa in which the ayat goes from “Master of the Day of Judgement” to “Master of the Day of Figs”. If we are going to embark on this journey, correct pronunciation is of the utmost importance so the words of your lord are not changed. If you struggle to have correct pronunciation do not let this deter you from your memorization journey but rather work on this simultaneously and May Allah(swt) give us all tawfiq to memorize the Quran with correct pronunciation.
